Formed in 1984, A Handful of Dust released a live cassette in 1985 and nothing more until this epic four-track album recorded by Alastair Galbraith in 1993 at his warehouse Studio 13. It was fully-improvised, using guitar, violin and keyboards. The impact of Galbraith's innate musicality coupled with his willingness to go as far out as the moment demanded resulted in the duo being thrown bodily straight to the front of the peloton.

In retrospect this record was the start of something spectacular. Originally a vinyl release on Twisted Village (Boston, MA), the album was given the catalogue number Hermes001, even though the Corpus Hermeticum label was not established till the following year.

This inaugural set created the template for the group, which alongside the ongoing work done by Russell with the Dead C, did a lot to establish free post-rock improvisation as a viable career choice in the antipodes and beyond.

A Handful of Dust are an improvised noise group consisting of a core duo of Bruce Russell and Alastair Galbraith. Formed originally in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1984, they have released a number of full-length albums on labels such as Corpus Hermeticum, Thin Wrist and Freeway Sound.
