Imaginary soundtrack to the French epic modernist poem 'Anabase' - which tells the story of nomads becoming settled urban dwellers in an imaginary Central Asia of the distant past. Really epic - in fact the kind of stuff William Burroughs used for some early cut-up experiments because the text is so charged with potential. On some of this I read excerpts but mainly this is sound experimentation and duo improv damage inspired by the text. Some primitive sound-on-sound tape work also features. recorded in the summer of 1994/95. The original cassette was later re-issued as an LP on English label Bluesilver, and then more recently as a cassette again on Imminent Frequencies in Brooklyn. Some loops from the original tapes of this album ended up on Bruce Russell's 1999 album 'Painting the Passports Brown'.

A Handful of Dust are an improvised noise group consisting of a core duo of Bruce Russell and Alastair Galbraith. Formed originally in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1984, they have released a number of full-length albums on labels such as Corpus Hermeticum, Thin Wrist and Freeway Sound. From 1993 to 2020 they were also frequently joined by the late Peter Stapleton playing percussion and electronics. ... more
